COSTS HOLD STEADY FOR REPLACEMENT MEDICAL CENTER
Despite a yearlong delay during which construction costs
rose 4 to 6 percent nationwide, officials at Story
County Medical Center (SCMC) announced today that the
SCMC replacement facility can be built for nearly the
same amount as originally planned.
The second rounds of bids for construction
of the 17-bed facility were opened on March 27. Staff from SCMC
and J. Dunn Construction, the construction management firm hired
to oversee the project, spent Friday, March 28, reviewing the
bids. The results were presented to the SCMC Board of Trustees
on March 31.
“I think the board was
surprised by the outcome,” said SCMC Administrator,
Todd Willert. “Looking at only the base bids,
the second round of bids were only $24,000 above the bids
received a year ago. This is remarkable given construction
inflation and the rise in oil prices.”
There were a total of 21 bid
packages for the project.
SCMC received 62 bids of which 55 were individual bids
and 7 were combined bids. The winning base bids for the Story
County
Medical
Center
project totaled $10,687,956.
Total cost for the project is
expected to be $13.5 million, with construction-related costs
running about $11.5 million. Existing hospital reserves and
revenues, loans and a capital fundraising campaign will fund the
project.

reception will be held at the corner of

invited to the celebration.
SCMC has been
meeting the health care needs of
Story
County residents since
1951. SCMC offers an extensive array of health care services
through its full-service primary care hospital located in Nevada
and its five outlying clinics located in Ames, Nevada, Maxwell,
Slater and Zearing.
The mission of SCMC is to provide high-quality healthcare
to the residents of Story County.
While the customer service and technical training of SCMC staff
is outstanding, SCMC is working to build a new facility to match
its clinical expertise. The new facility will be located on the
southwest corner of 19th Street and South G Avenue
in Nevada
and will allow for enhancement of existing services and the
addition of others.
